Belles Topped by Knights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's soccer team fell in a 2-0 final against Calvin on Thursday night in MIAA action.

After a trio of shots by the Knights early in the game, Rose Stackhouse put a shot on goal for the Belles in the seventh minute of play. Calvin earned a corner kick a minute later, and Delaney Rohlman came up with the save off of a header from the set piece. Rohlman added two more saves over the next 17 minutes of play while the defense forced the Knights into taking off-the-mark shots as the game remained scoreless. A dangerous shot was stopped with a team save by the Belles, but the Knights regained possession and capitalized with a goal in the 33rd minute of play.

Sophie Bubnar registered a shot less than five minutes later as the Belles looked to respond with a strike of their own, but the freshman's effort went wide of frame. Rohlman collected another save in the 40th minute, and Megan Saunders had a shot in the 42nd minute blocked as the score stood at 1-0 at the halftime break.

The Belles put some strong pressure on the Calvin back line early in the second half of play. A determined effort led to a corner kick for Saint Mary's in the 54th minute. Continuing that pressure, Abby Schmidt then sent a shot on goal from the top of the box in the 55th minute as the Calvin goalkeeper made the save off of a bounce. The defense continued to stand strong and forced the Knights into taking shots from outside of the 18-yard box. Calvin, however, broke through with a goal in the 77th minute for the 2-0 advantage. That same 2-0 score would stand as the final margin as the Belles were unable to get a scoring chance late in the contest.

Rose Stackhouse and Abby Schmidt each had a shot on goal for Saint Mary's. Sophie Bubnar and Megan Saunders each added a shot. Delaney Rohlman made 12 saves.

The Belles (6-8, 1-3 MIAA) return home to host Kalamazoo on Saturday for a noon conference contest.
