GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's tennis team fell in a 7-2 final against host Calvin on Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center in the first conference match of the season for both squads.
All three doubles flights were decided by the narrowest of margins in the competition.
Meredith Heckert and
Kalyn Borger were edged out in an 8-6 final at two doubles.
Nikki Rust and
Kathleen McLeod shouldered a similar 8-6 setback at the three doubles flight. One doubles came down to a tiebreaker after both sides were tied at 7-7, but
Lucy Chamberlin and
Alayna Campbell fell by two points in the 8-7 (8-6) match.
Chamberlin had a 6-3, 6-0 setback at one singles.
Meredith Heckert battled in a 6-2, 6-4 loss at three singles.
Kathleen McLeod prevailed in a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory at four singles.
Kalyn Borger fell 6-4, 6-0 at five singles.
Alayna Campbell took a gritty 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win at two singles.
Nikki Rust, meanwhile, came up shy in a 6-4, 6-0 final at six singles.
The Belles (3-7, 0-1 MIAA) travel to Olivet on Wednesday, March 30 for a 4:00 p.m. conference match against the Comets.
