ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Mary's tennis team fell in an 8-1 final against John Carroll in the morning and had their evening match against Covenant suspended due to rain.

 

Lucy Chamberlin and Alayna Campbell had an 8-2 setback at one doubles, and Kalyn Borger and Meredith Heckert fell 8-4 at two doubles. Kathleen McLeod and Nikki Rust, meanwhile, battled their way to an 8-6 win at three doubles to make it a 2-1 overall score going into singles play at the USTA National Campus.

 

Campbell shouldered a 6-1, 6-0 setback at three singles, and Borger was on the short end of a 6-1, 6-1 final at five singles. Heckert fell in a 6-2, 6-2 two singles contest as Blue Streaks clinched the match. McLeod had a tough 6-0, 6-3 loss at four singles. Chamberlin nearly forced a tiebreaker in a tight 6-3, 7-5 one singles competition. Rust captured her opening set by a 6-3 margin at six singles, but her counterpart edged out the senior in the second set by a 7-5 score and took the tiebreaker 10-6.

 

In exhibition play, Katie Hunter and Bailey Siglow lost in an 8-4 final at four doubles. Hunter went on to take an 8-3 win at seven singles play while Siglow had a 6-3 setback at eight singles.

 

The second match of the day for the Belles was suspended after doubles play due to rain. Borger and Heckert had a tough 8-5 setback at two doubles, while Chamberlin and Campbell also had a tight 8-5 loss at one doubles. McLeod and Rust were trailing 5-0 in their three doubles match before staging a massive comeback in an 8-6 win. 

 

The teams are tentatively scheduled to finish the match on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

 

The next regularly scheduled matches for the Belles are set for Wednesday, March 9 when Saint Mary's is slated to take on Baldwin Wallace at 11:00 a.m. and Wheaton at 6:00 p.m.
