NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Soccer defeated Governors State University on Sunday afternoon in their home opener, 3-1. The Belles improve to 2-0 on the season while the Jaguars fall to 0-1.
Saint Mary's took the majority of possession in the first half as they would outdo Governors State in shots, 5-3. The Belles would get on the board off the foot of freshman Mia Johnson (Mission Viejo, CA) as she fought through a pair of Jaguar defenders to score her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute. Freshman Marley Cady (Cincinnati, OH) played a beautiful ball to assist Johnson and allow her get past the defense.
Saint Mary's would extend their lead toward the end of the first half as sophomore Isabella Kreydich (Tinley Park, IL) would find the back of the net in the 44th minute off a freekick, placing the ball perfectly in the left hand corner over the jumping wall. Her goal would send the Belles into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Governors State would try and mount a comeback in the second half, cutting the deficit in half with a goal in the 68th minute. But Saint Mary's would bounce back after a corner would bounce off multiple players and find the foot of senior Janelle Aiello (Plymouth, MI) in the 80th minute to extend the lead to 3-1. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
The Belles would hold off the Jaguars attack for the final 10 minutes to close out their second win of the season.
Saint Mary's would outshoot Governors State 13-8, 7-3 in shots on goal, in the match while also tallying more corners than the Jaguars, 8-1. Johnson would lead the team with five total shots while Kreydich would be the other Belle with multiple. Kreydich would also be the only one with multiple shots on goal.
Sophomore Keona Caraballo (Parma, OH) would make two saves in the game in her second win of the season.
