Belles Comeback Halted by Hornets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Saint Mary's College Soccer fell to Kalamazoo College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Belles fall to 4-8-1 (1-5 MIAA) while the Hornets improve to 11-2-1 (5-0 MIAA)

Both teams had chances offensively early in the first half but strong defense held on to keep the match scoreless early. Kalamazoo would get a chance late in the half as they would find the back of the net in the 38th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams went scoreless throughout the remainder of the half as the Hornets took their lead into the break.

After a constant change of possession throughout the start of the second half, Kalamazoo would double their lead just over six minutes into the second half. Six minutes later, after a free kick was sent into the box and cleared back out, junior Danielle Escobedo (Yorba Linda, CA) sent the ball back in and bounced it off the crossbar as it found the foot of freshman Lily Larimer (Pittsford, NY) cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 58th minute. While both teams had small chances offensively as the game winded down, Kalamazoo closed out the match for the 2-1 win.

Larimer tallied the Belles goal while Escobedo added an assist. Larimer and Escobedo tallied two shots each while five other Belles all tallied one shot on the afternoon. Larimer added two shots on goal while Escobedo, graduate Ava Slater (Fort Wayne, IN), and senior Claire Keely (Acworth, GA) added one each. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Krayer (Hinsdale, IL) tied a career high with 10 saves on the afternoon.
